That's right, District 36 Republican Delegate Ellen Campbell voted against preventing deaths of children from unsecured firearms.
We cannot always be there to protect our children. We send them to school. We drop them off with friends for playdates. We let them go to sleepovers. We assume other adults will protect them in our absence.
But what if, at the home of a friend, they come across an unsecured, loaded gun? What if, in our own homes, we get careless and forget to secure guns – and a small child gets his hands on one?
This does happen, in fact, in Virginia more children are shot from accidental shootings than any other state (83 times, in fact, from 2015 to 2023). You may also remember a 6 year old in Virginia brought an unsecured gun from home to school and ended up shooting his teacher. These were preventable tragedies.
Shouldn’t there be some commonsense rules surrounding securing guns in homes?
Wouldn’t it make sense to require gun owners to keep guns in a locked container? To have gun dealers help make the public aware of such a law? To mandate that our public health and safety officials inform the public and offer aid for securing guns?
During last year’s General Assembly session, Democrats in the House of Delegates introduced and passed House Bill 1597 that would have helped protect our children by securing guns in the home.
Heck, even Governor Youngkin agreed with a tax credit that promoted the purchase of gun safety devices that secure guns in the home.
Our delegate, Republican Ellen Campbell, voted NO.
Vote for Democrat Makayla Venable to replace Ellen Campbell in our House of Delegates and help make Virginia a safer place for our kids.
