Glenn Youngkin, our Virginia Governor, failed potential presidential candidate, and, now, apparently an expert in foreign policy, border security, immigration and humanism, recently stated on twitter "Virginia stands with Texas. Greg Abbott is doing the job Joe Biden and his border czar refuse to do to secure our border. The Biden administration has turned every state into a border state. We must stop the flow of fentanyl, save lives, and secure our southern border."
No, Glenn, Virginia does not stand with your Texas political stunt.
Since your esteemed and learned view is that the border is currently still a mess, does this mean, Glenn, that the $3.1 million of Virginia taxpayer's money that you spent in 2023 sending national guard troops to Texas was a failed and wasteful policy ? And thus, are you also admitting that the Texas Governor Greg Abbott's approach to securing the border (which includes refusing to give drinking water to migrants in the summer heat and letting them drown in the Rio Grande) is also not working ? If so, you are following in the footsteps of another failed border policy leader and a man you kneel to - Donald Trump. Your beloved leader also did not fix the border issue during his 4 years as President (even when he had total control of Congress) with such policies as name calling, making Mexico pay for a wall, and the horrid family separation efforts.
As the current Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, Don Scott, said in May 2023, “I'm disturbed that he [Youngkin] would spend $3.1 million to send National Guardsmen from Virginia down without a specific and prescribed mission.”
So, what was the end result of our Virginia National Guard troops defending the country against the hordes of rabid immigrants storming the borders, creating mayhem and carrying massive amounts of fentanyl on their backs and machine guns in their arms ? "Virginia National Guard finds no fentanyl, refers 86 migrants a day during $2 million trip to Texas border." What they found were many individuals and families who were asking for jobs and help, wanted a better life and to care for their families. Yes, they did also find a some criminals and referred them to law enforcement.
No, Glenn, Virginia does not stand with your waste of Virginia taxpayer dollars and nothing to show for it.
In the meantime, did you know that the US Senate and the Biden Administration have been working on a bipartisan border security bill ?
And now there is this bit of political hypocrisy regarding the bipartisan bill from Trump, the Republican Party and Mitch McConnell "McConnell told GOP senators that before border security talks began, immigration policy united Republicans and Ukraine aid divided them. “Politics on this have changed,” McConnell said of solving the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. That’s because former President Donald Trump wants to run his 2024 campaign focusing on immigration. “We don’t want to do anything to undermine him,” McConnell said of Trump, a one-time collaborator turned nemesis."
In other words, Trump, Greg Abbott, Youngkin and Republicans want to delay legislative action on the border and use the hyperbolized “chaos” to their advantage in electing Trump. They want to use the issue to anger and galvanize their base.
No, Glenn, Virginia does not stand with a delay of legislative action for political benefit.
However, I will give credit where it is due from 2 Republicans that are appalled by this particular political strategy.
Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., urged his colleagues not to make it all about politics at the behest of another candidate. “I didn’t come here to have the president as a boss or a candidate as a boss. I came here to pass good, solid policy," Tillis said. “It is immoral for me to think you looked the other way because you think this is the linchpin for President Trump to win.”
Yes, the border issue is very complicated and has flummoxed presidents and Congresses going back at least 30 years. I am not an expert in any way but I am just intending to call out the bullhockey. Unfortunately, partisanship has decreased the chances of finding solutions but we have to start somewhere.
In conclusion, Glenn, please use your influence to help pass the bipartisan border security bill, help pass a Ukraine Aid bill, stop wasting Virginia taxpayer dollars, increase funding for mental health care and substance abuse treatment services (perhaps by rolling back the tax cuts you gave to the wealthy and corporations ?) and be a real humanist and protect the welfare of all people.
Oh, and Glenn, please stop lying for political advantage and using human lives as political pawns. It is not a good look. Perhaps this educational video from Robert Reich will help you - Five Biggest Border Lies Debunked.
No, Glenn Youngkin, Virginia does not stand with Texas immigration politics.
