Senator Kaine, who are you?

Yvonne Surette

On Saturday, January 25, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine (D) voted for one of Donald J. Trump’s cabinet nominees – Kristi Noem - to be head of Homeland Security. Those of us who have always felt that Tim Kaine is doing a good job as our Senator have been scratching their heads wondering why.

As Chris Graham, editor of the Augusta Free Press says, “Still waiting to hear from Kaine as to why he joined the 59-34, largely Republican majority to confirm Noem as the point person for Donald Trump’s immigrant purge and effort to eliminate FEMA.”

He's not mistaken. Kristi Noem has been a very flawed governor, with no idea how to handle disasters in her state or – now - threats to the US. But we cannot rectify her past mistakes; what matters is that now she will be another foot soldier to fight for Donald J. Trump’s vision for America.

Our Senator voted to confirm her appointment.

This week, the Senate will vote on two more important cabinet nominees: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Kash Patel to head the FBI.

Senator Tim Kaine will be voting on these candidates.

We, as Democrats, must let him know two things:

  1. We do not approve his confirmation of Kristi Noem, and

  2. We urge him to reject these next two problematic candidates

For information on RFK Jr’s dangerous agenda (anti-vaccines, pro-raw milk), here is Senator Elizabeth Warren’s recent letter to him, to let him know how she will question him.

Can we count on Senator Tim Kaine to ask these kinds of questions, or will he cave?

Kash Patel, in the running to head up the FBI, is a lawyer, a QAnon conspiracy theorist, and a believer in political violence to solve problems. He is a Trump loyalist who does not actually believe in the word of law. (https://www.yahoo.com/news/kash-patel-extremely-dangerous-fbi-173505765.html

Will Senator Kaine confirm him?

Let’s urge him not too.

If you want to send a quick email or make a phone call to Senator Kaine’s office to urge him to make a sensible choice and reject these two candidates to be in Trump’s cabinet, you can do so easily. People in Congress always note when emails and calls are coming into their offices from Constituents. And they listen. Tim Kaine needs to be reminded what his job is, and who is loyalty should be to: his constituents, US!

He needs to serve all Virginians, both Republicans and Democrats, and he needs to stop serving our current president.

Here is the link to the form to send an email:

Here is the office phone number: (202) 224-4024

If you call the office, be brief, be polite (your call will likely be answered by a young Congressional aide). Urge him to continue to protect and serve his constituents.

Here’s a sample script for a short email:

“Dear Senator Kaine,

I was very impressed with your strong questioning of our newly installed Defense Secretary, and I have always been a supporter of yours” (you can add something personal here, for instance, have you enjoyed meeting him over the years, or did you vote to return him to the Senate?).

“However, I am dismayed at your recent vote to confirm Kristi Noem as Head of Homeland Security, and I will be watching your votes on the next confirmations very carefully. Will you be voting for your constituents to be in danger? If Robert F. Kennedy Jr heads up health care for the nation, we are in danger of losing vaccines and many rules and laws that keep us safe. Will you be voting to confirm Kash Patel who wants to attack the civil liberties of American citizens? PLEASE reject these candidates.”

Tweak if you want to highlight your own fears about RFK Jr and Kash Patel.

Americans are in a whole new landscape, and it’s a dangerous one. We need to watch our leaders carefully and remind them of their duties and allegiances.

Do it now. Hearings start on Wednesday, the 29th.
