The new Virginia state budget allows any county or city to ask voters to approve an extra local sales tax of up to 1%, used exclusively for school construction and renovation projects. Staunton City Council initiated a referendum through a resolution it passed unanimously, placing the question before voters this year. This referendum will appear on every Staunton ballot in the November 3, 2026 General Election.

Sales Tax Referendum Ballot Question:

Shall the City of Staunton, Virginia, be allowed to enact a local retail sales tax of up to one percent (1%) to provide funds that can only be used for construction or major renovation of public schools in the City of Staunton and that such tax shall expire on July 23, 2046?
